How do I know if I need a Private Investigator? When two individuals enter into a contract, be it personal or business, there are consequences for terminating the contract without consent. If one of the individuals under contract does not wish to meet these obligations, then the end result may be a lawsuit. In preparation for the litigation, evidence may need to be obtained to prove allegations. If an investigator is contacted at the proper time, the evidence can be gathered in a professional manner, and the claims will be much easier to substantiate. |

What does a Private Detective do? A Private Detective’s duty is to observe, document, and report. Observations can be made by reviewing documents, checking records, doing surveillance, etc. Surveillance is probably the most common of these. During the surveillance, it is important for the Detective to conduct his observations for the purpose of report writing. This documentation aids in accurate reporting, and is commonly in the form of dictation, 35mm photos and 8mm video. While these are the most common methods of documentation, others can and will be used. It should be noted that, at times, even the best Detective writes a report complete with the photo and video documentation, if there is any. When all the evidence has been gathered, the Detective completes a final report and produces it to the client. |

Why can’t I do it myself? Bi-as 1.n. a temperamental or emotional leaning to one side…. It is innate in human behavior to be swayed by our emotions. While this is normal and healthy, our court system recognizes this as an unhealthy approach to proving guilt or innocence. Ex-pert 1.n. someone whose knowledge or skill is specialized and profound, especially as the result of much practical experience….. In most cases where a person attempts to gather information on their own, or they get a friend’s “help”, they get caught. They may not even know they have been caught. This ultimately results in the person (under surveillance) hiding their activities even more, causing the want-to-be PI to hire a real one. What started off as a way to save money will most likely cost the client double. |

Can I at least help my Private Inverstigator? There are many ways that you can help your investigator. The first is to provide them with as much information as possible. Even the little things that you do not consider important can help with an investigation. The second, is not to act any different than normal. When a client is given important information about a subject’s activity, it can be very difficult to act normal. This may cause that person to become suspicious that you hired a PI. Third, do not try to conduct surveillance yourself, and do not come into the area where surveillance is being conducted. There are other considerations to be made. The best thing to do is to listen to you PI, he or she is the professional.
